Emily grew up on a property just outside of Willow Tree, NSW. Born and bred on the family farm, Emily had the opportunity to learn the seasons, and everything involved with the cattle and cropping industry which Emily was raised around.
When Emily reached schooling age, she moved away and found her true passion for agriculture when she commenced a Bachelor of Agribusiness, majoring in finance with the University of New England – Armidale. After graduating from university, Emily accepted a role in a local bank for over 5 years and managed customers within the agribusiness sector. Through Emily’s position here, she began to learn the ins and outs of what farmers go through and how she could support them in a financial capacity.
Developing such a passion for agriculture at a young age, Emily always knew she wanted to work in the agricultural industry in a financial position. “[Agriculture] is an essential part of living and agriculture is always going to be needed; you can’t not love it when you’re from it,” says Emily.
18 months ago, Emily commenced a role as Pursehouse Rural’s Financial Analyst. Within this role Emily provides financial insights, reporting, and data collection; Emily also oversees the Pathway Ag Finance facility that Pursehouse Rural has on offer for customers.
During Emily’s time with Pursehouse Rural, Pathway Ag Finance—a seasonal crop and input finance solution from Pursehouse Rural—was introduced, providing Emily with an opportunity to expand her role. Through Pathway Ag Finance, it is Emily’s role to support customers who need to purchase agricultural chemicals, fertiliser, and seed before the time of planting. Pathway Ag Finance is there to support farmers during the beginning of the cropping season with extended terms that fit with their cash flow. “It is a facility that anyone can take up if they require it, it’s there if you need it, but if you don’t. It’s not going to cost anything. It is a backup for those unprecedented times,” says Emily.
In a position that combines her passion for agriculture and interest in finance, Emily finds her role very rewarding. Emily is there from the beginning till the end, supporting farmers financially every step along the way.
Emily says, “I love being able to help people in a financial capacity. I could put what I was learning into real-life experiences coming from the farm.”
“Seeing the whole way through makes it rewarding for me on this side of the fence, to watch them do it and just being able to support. It is rewarding to see the customers benefit from it as well,” says Emily.
During Emily’s time with Pursehouse Rural, she has enjoyed learning and being challenged with the diverse geographic range of branches.
“It’s a good community, group of employees, and everyone is here for the same purpose to support customers, to help each other out, and it has values behind it that make it such a nice place to be and to work,” says Emily.
During Emily’s free time, she enjoys spending time with her family at the farm, being around horses, and chasing her daughter around.
The best piece of advice Emily has received is to “Grow through what you go through”. Emily shared that each day is going to be different, and it is easier to continue to learn and grow through challenges that life may throw at you than to look back all the time.
